I am sure that most of you observed the heavy police activity at the
University East yesterday.
As I am not sure if all of you read the local newspapers, and to prevent the
spread of rumors, let me give you some information on the incident.
Yesterday morning, a young man who had studied chemistry here for one
semester, went into the chemistry department and demanded potassium cyanide
at gun point. It later became evident that this robbery apparently is linked
to a triple murder in Erbach (south of Ulm) committed earlier, during the
night.
The where-abouts of the former student were unclear and it was suspected that
he may still be in the university building. Because he was armed,
additionally carrying a substantial amount of a toxic substance, and is the
major suspect in the shooting deaths in Erbach, police had to seal off the
building and conduct a room-to-room search which was completed only at 21.45
last night. The young man so far has not been found. Apparently, he left a
suicide note where he admitted the killings of his grandmother and his
parents.
The name of the suspect has been released by the police. It is Frederik Haase,
he is 20 years old and of Korean decent on his mother’s side. Police of
course asks for any information which may lead to his arrest, but also
suggests caution because Frederik Haase is believed to be armed with a 7.65
mm pistol.
I personally believe there is no immediate danger to anyone at the university,
because this is, in the first place, a grave tragedy within one family, and
because it is not very likely that he is still on campus. Still, you may see
increased police activity today especially in the forest around the
university.

call me.
